While narrowly focused on brain research, this film demonstrates the use of advanced technology to explore what scientists can learn about our thoughts, in some cases even controlling them, and using brain power or thoughts alone to control computer-operated devices such as wheelchairs. Using tomography to observe metabolic changes within the brain while testing with varying stimuli researchers can watch the thought process and how it responds depending on the content presented. Some experiments challenge the concept of free will while others have implications for improving the lives of paraplegics and stroke victims. Throughout ethicists discuss the issues and their implications. Part philosophy, part science, this film presents impressive research along with thoughtful analysis. A similar film, The Brain (2008, Darlow Smithson Productions for History) is more broadly focused and is a good choice to complement The Hunt for Our Thoughts. Technical quality is very high. Ideal for teaching neurology and philosophy, especially ethics. Highly recommended for all academic libraries.
