Reviewed by Brad Eden, Associate University Librarian for Technical Services and Scholarly Communication, University of California, Santa BarbaraThis video is the first one in an eight-part series titled Cosmos. The other DVDs in the series include The Universe part 2, Planet Earth parts 1 & 2, Nebulas & Galaxies parts 1 & 2, and Solar System parts 1 & 2. This DVD discusses the explosion of supernova SN 1006, which happened over a thousand years ago, and was documented by ancient observers. It was brighter than Venus, and was visible for weeks after it happened. Astronomers think that this explosion was caused by a white dwarf star that captured mass from a neighboring star, became unstable and then exploded. Recent examination and exploration of the supernova through the Hubble Telescope have assisted scientists in hypothesizing how the origins of the universe may have happened. A very interesting and beautiful DVD.
