This compelling and thoughtful video, produced by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), attempts to answer the complex question of why reading matters in an ever changing world filled with digital technology. Neuroscientists, through the use of modern imaging technologies, have discovered that reading involves more than one part of the brain. The process of reading is multifaceted and this activity allows the brain to build new connections. It is believed that reading has the power to change individuals in very powerful and meaningful ways, and gives us the ability to act out scenarios without risk, thus making readers more empathic to others.

The video examines the positive impact that reading has on stroke patients and people suffering from depression. Additional conversation revolves around recent research concerning the reading habits of middle and high school students and their deficient comprehension skills. This lack of skill set is thought to be caused by the digital revolution with all of its technologies. Research concerning the Bronte family, the novel Wuthering Heights, and the work of Shakespeare further proves that reading does matter in spite of a digital world made up of video games and blogs. The technical quality of this video is excellent. This video is highly recommended and will be a very useful and welcome addition for all library collections.
