Kevin Doyle, narrator of the video and co-author of the ECO Guide to Careers that Make a Difference (2004, Island Press), explains “A green career is a personal choice to invest your life work in making a more sustainable world.” Viewers of this 4-part series quickly learn anyone can have a green career even in accounting, construction, hotel management, and information technology (IT).

The series provides real-life, on-the-job interviews of over 16 different jobs and fields. The interviews are brief and give you an insight into the day-to-day work of each job. In addition, web sites for more information and career tips from the experts are provided. The types of careers and persons interviewed are diverse and provide examples of present-day careers for those with high school diplomas, technical college degrees, and more advanced professional degrees.

Each DVD has a different theme and title, for example the DVD Combating Climate Change and Improving Air Quality includes careers in environmental law, public transportation logistics, diesel mechanics, and research scientists. The individual DVD titles do not fully reflect the careers highlighted, so be sure to read the DVD description and note the jobs discussed.

Yes, much of this information can be found elsewhere, but the video format is very good and my preferred choice for students. Viewers can opt to watch the entire series or just one of the 5 minute career sections; each DVD and each chapter can stand alone. Based on the current green career DVDs available, this is the best career video for college students and for current job seekers.

Green Careers is recommended for public and high school libraries and highly recommended for academic libraries and university career centers. Green Careers can be purchased as a set or individually. A 20-page teacher’s guide is available as well from the Cambridge Educational web site, which is appropriate for high school and college.
