Setting off with the premise that adults can have a relaxing but meaningful vacation in a non-resort destination, this film convincingly makes the argument. While this highly interactive DVD makes an appeal to the parents, the more ardent and purposeful case is made to the children.

The DVD charts the enjoyable and educational endeavors of a husband, wife and two young boys in rural and metropolitan Alaska. This film takes the form of a family log, discussing the plane ride and preparing for the cold, and then ventures on to more elaborate activities, such as dog sledding. With the audience of children firmly in mind, the film offers supporting “factoids” delivered “Pop-Up Video” style. Viewers learn auxiliary information without breaking the rhythm of the presentation. The boys are shown interacting extensively with museum curators, airplane pilots, etc. so as to assure child viewers that a potential trip to Alaska would indeed be very engaging. The filmmakers included samples of innovative and unique activities, such as swimming outside in freezing temperatures in water from geothermal springs.

The production is very well done and target audience-centered. The DVD is replete with stunning shots of the Alaskan wilderness, wildlife, and artwork, such as ice sculptures. This film successfully strives to be both educational and promotional. It demonstrates Alaskan culture, energy resources, conservation, and history lessons, and provides a basic introduction to the demographics and composition of Alaska.

There are comic sound effects from time to time, and plenty of scenes with silly moments with the family. The navigation of the DVD is very child-friendly, and includes plenty of extras such as gag reels. The filmmakers describe an Alaskan trip not simply as a vacation, but as a “journey,” and constantly promote the “Travel with Kids” web site. This is an excellent information source for families contemplating a trip to Alaska.
