Mozart’s masterpiece is presented before a live audience with all the creativity, energy and verve expected of producer David McVicar. He wastes no time, using the overture to advantage presenting a pantomime of the complex interactions among servants within their hierarchy, going about their work (or avoiding it when possible). The sets have subtle signs of deterioration perhaps suggesting the erosion of the Count’s grip on his old ways. The entire cast is outstanding vocally, both singly and in the many fine ensembles. Their acting is exceptional and completely convincing. Erwin Schrott is a confident, authoritative, sensuous Figaro with a warm, strong voice. Susanna is sung with equal energy and confidence by the charming Miah Persson. Their interactions are masterpieces of barely contained sexual tension. Gerald Finley is convincing as the appropriately domineering, pushy and unpleasantly persistent Count. Dorothea Roschmann as his Countess effectively conveys her changing moods, delightfully scheming with Susanna. Rinat Shaham’s Cherubino is compelling, with palpable anxiety and nervousness. Even the minor characters are exceptional, taking advantage of every opportunity for subtlety. Conductor Antonio Pappano brings out the best in the Royal Opera House Orchestra. It’s a shame this outstanding production is missing subtitles, English and otherwise! It would have been even more enjoyable with them and certainly, for students, they would have been a real plus. Nevertheless, this is highly recommended for high school level and higher audiences.
