This aptly titled video is just what it says it is: a test to detect possible addiction to drugs and alcohol. The questions, designed by psychologist Michael Dennis, are aimed at teens and young adults to determine the level of involvement with addicting substances. There are 11 questions (each also being a chapter heading) posed by the program hosts and answered by recovering young adults. Mr. Dennis also comments on each question, adding more explanation from the professional counseling side of the issues. The topics cover a full range of major emotional and physical addiction symptoms beginning with hiding substance use to building a tolerance to acknowledging when drugs are taking over your life. The “test” format is an entertaining way of introducing the concept of addiction.

The impact of seeing and hearing the stories from peers is a strong motivator, and Human Relations Media always uses it to the fullest, most professional extent with its programs. The Drug and Alcohol Addiction Test is no exception. Technical qualities are first-rate, and the 25 minute time frame is perfect for classroom viewing. Since each DVD chapter is one question, stopping the program for discussion is a cinch. The accompanying resource guide for instructors is included on the DVD as a pdf file and contains a wealth of information including lesson plans about the topics. Those who work with teens/young adults and those training to work with them will find this program useful.
