Like most InJoy Productions, Managing Early Breastfeeding Challenges, is a very well-organized, professionally produced, and easy-to-follow health education video. Unlike others in the InJoy library, this one targets healthcare providers, specifically maternal and child care nurses and lactation consultants, rather than parents themselves as the audience, although the information would be suitable for parents as well. Divided into brief segments (which might be watched separately for the time-challenged), on breastfeeding challenges for newborns and mothers, as well as milk production concerns and discharge planning to avoid problems at home, each segment’s main points are highlighted and summarized at the end to facilitate learning. “Tips and Techniques” for easing the process are also scattered throughout the video segments. InJoy even provides a free “Facilitator’s Guide” for instructors at InJoyVideos.com. The only minor complaint with this otherwise excellent production is the frequent directions to “contact an IBCLE [lactation] consultant” when problems arise in newly breastfeeding mothers and babies – it comes off like an infomercial after a while. However, the film is overall a terrific guide for nurses assisting new parents with common adjustment issues surrounding this “natural” process. Recommended for all health sciences collections.
