Breaking the Mold is part one of a three part series that counsels young adults on how to make career choices that are suited to their individual likes, talents, and goals. The title includes Interviews with students who speak candidly about their family, home-life, career dreams and their efforts to achieved personal happiness and success by listening to their heart instead of external voices of parents and others. The conversations are believable and honest and speak about the lessons that each has learned upon careful thought and reflection. Professionals in the field of psychology and counseling offer their understanding on the complications that youth face when deciding which career path to secure, and offer thoughtful advice concerning the value of a college education versus entering the workforce after high school. While most of the video has a professional quality, some of its content sounds as though it is being read from a manual and therefore, comes across to the viewer as being scripted and less authentic. While short in length, Breaking the Mold, packs a lot in information that viewers will find insightful as they make the transition from student to a functioning participant of the workforce. This video has some thought provoking questions (teacher’s guide) that educators can use to promote discussions around topics that can be scary and perhaps a bit of a mystery for both parents and young adults. This video is recommended for use within guidance and career centers, as well as junior and high schools that have a career exploration framework or curriculum.
