In this documentary, director, Robert Child tells, through a riveting blend of personal narrative and archival footage, the epic story of the USS Franklin (CV-13). “The Ship That Wouldn’t Die”, as the USS Franklin (CV-13) is often referred to, is one of combat as well as rescue and recovery. On March 19th, 1945, the USS Franklin was less than 100 miles off the coast of Imperial Japan, near Kyusk, when it was attacked by enemy aircraft. What would follow would be one of the greatest single and successful rescue and recovery operations in United States naval history. However, this epic story was nearly lost when more than 1,700 officers and men were accused of desertion by the skipper. Now more than 65 years later, these brave survivors have the opportunity to share their story. The cinematography and sound quality of this documentary are excellent. The DVD features also includes an interview with the narrator of the documentary, Captain Dale Dye. This film would make a great addition to any library, public or academic.
