The First World War and Its Consequences provides a database of over 320 images, including photographs, drawings, documents, maps, and, from my count, thirteen video clips. The supplied Picture Base software from AVP provides an easy to use interface to the images and includes windows for: the image or video clip, a printed description of the image, and a notepad area for users to add annotations or questions (this feature can be locked). Picture Base allows keyword searching of the descriptions of the images as well as an option to display images within a module either alphabetically or sequentially. The modules are

  • The Causes of the First World War
  • Major Events of the First World War
  • The First Onslaught
  • Stalemate on the Western Front
  • Russia and the Eastern Front
  • The Home Front
  • The War at Sea and in the Air
  • The Coming of Victory
  • The Post-War Period
  • Mr. Punch's History of the Great War

The program ran with acceptable speed on a 486 DX2/50 with 8MB RAM under Windows 3.11 and was quite snappy on a Pentium Pro 200 with 32 MB RAM under Windows NT 3.51. The program will run without sound; print quality of images was excellent at 600 dpi on an HP LaserJet 6P; Video for Windows (included) must be installed to play video clips; the program does not include an "uninstall" icon for the AVP Picture Base software.

The descriptions and content of the images are suitable for high school through undergradute college levels for the study of World War I and associated topics. Although the list price of $149.00 seems a bit steep considering the content, The First World War and Its Consequences is recommended where there is an expressed need for a non-print jumping-off point for student research (or, for an instructor, as a source of material for classroom discussion).
