Nahmias and Murray bring a stark portrayal of how culture, history and social institutions such as education may be dramatically shaped by politics and nationalism. In this film, we examine how culture through art and the presentation of education in Cuba has been affected by politics and nationalism for over 40 years. Although the setting of the film is modern day Cuba, we quickly flash back to the wake of the Cuban revolution. It was during this rapidly transitioning time that Fidel Castro commissioned three young artists and Che Guevara to establish what was to be Cuba’s National Arts Schools on the previously prestigious golf course of Havana. As is often the case during politically volatile times, the new school and its classes were halted for more important and critical issues of state and politics. Over forty years later this dream has been reclaimed as the three young artists are called to return to Cuba to reclaim their visionary masterpiece, complete the physical construction, and awaken the hopes of the people of Cuba.

It may be said that art is the awakening of society in which the people are enabled, encouraged, and enlightened by the exhibition of their culture. Unfinished Spaces starkly portrays how the arts throughout changing times, as affected by politics and nationhood unfold to enable and encourage a people to take pride in their culture, and far more enlighten them about their heritage. In this way, the arts are critical to helping each society to perpetuate their culture and traditions while uplifting them in a positive way in seeking their future as a people.

Unfinished Spaces is offered in two time lengths that will assist educators in presenting the film in class. It is accompanied by several educational tools found on the film’s website. These tools include a press kit, promotional information on hosting a viewing of the film and discussion with the director/producer. Sponsored Trailers in English and in Spanish.
