Stress is a normal part of life. In fact, the human body is wired to deal with stress in either a “fight or flight” mechanism. According to the psychologist interviewed on the video, there is good stress and bad stress, and it is a matter of a person finding the optimal balance between the two that allows for a person to function normally. The teenage years can especially be stressful: academics, sports performance, social and interpersonal relationships, and family pressures. The video discusses the side effects of bad stress, which include such factors as insomnia, headaches, stomach pains, strained relationships, and poor academic and athletic performance. On the other hand, good stress can help us achieve better grades in school, perform better athletically, and strive to improve relationships. A great benefit of the video was the provision of information and examples on how one can deal with stress effectively and positively. The methods of positive stress relief include physical activity/exercise, healthy eating and sleep, talking with family and friends, surrounding oneself with positive influences, engaging in enjoyable activities (hobbies), and just plain relaxation. The information provided by the psychologist provides both a foundation for understanding stress, and for adding greater credibility to the information. This video will be useful for a middle or high school health education class, psychology class, or as a general library resource for students interested in learning more about stress, its effects on the human body, and ways to positively deal with stress.
