Somm follows several individuals as they prepare for the incredibly rigorous Master Sommelier exam – the highest attainment for wine knowledge and tasting. Viewers will get a fascinating view into the world of wine and an appreciation for the magnitude of the achievement of passing the exam. Created by first-time filmmaker Jason Wise, Somm is impressive with great visuals (including some high-speed photography), an engaging story with dramatic tension as well as humor, and is scored with excellent original music.

Wine lovers will love this film but non-drinkers too may be drawn in by the colorful characters documented and interviewed, the bizarre and evocative flavor descriptions, and the emotional ride as the exam rapidly approaches. Somm is highly recommended for general adult audiences, and would be a worthy addition for academic libraries supporting hospitality or culinary programs. It is less suitable for younger and under-age audiences only for the sake of alcohol and some language considerations.

The extra features are also top-notch, including two “Making of” shorts (one for the film and one for the music specifically), an alternative ending, and an entertaining commentary track.
