How to Raise Emotionally Healthy Children is a three volume set based on the book of the same name by Gerald Newmark, PhD. The set is organized by developmental stage: Babies, Toddlers, and Preschoolers. Each disc is organized in the same manner. It begins by presenting the same Five Critical Emotional Needs: that the child feels respected, important, accepted, included, and secure. The film goes on to demonstrate what those five emotional needs mean to that particular age. Following are three situations and corresponding Parent Skill Builders. (For example: Situation 1: Crying. Parent Skill Builder: Stress Management.)

The program emphasizes that understanding what babies and children need “is a skill we learn with practice.” The information and tone is sympathetic to both parents and children. Babies and children have the right to their emotions, and handling those emotions is a big adjustment for parents. The families shown are diverse and include extended family and friends. The films are clearly organized with an array of visual and auditory memory aids. Visual markers display the critical emotion that’s being demonstrated. Also information is repeated and reviewed, a different family is used for each emotion, and each emotion is color-coded.
