An important and enlightening documentary for both parents and educators, Embracing Dyslexia is a great resource that puts this developmental reading disorder in perspective for both professionals and non-professionals. The producers of this film provide parents and educators with essential knowledge for working or living with anyone who may be struggling in life because of this disorder. Throughout the film there is a strong emphasis on teacher education and the importance of preparing new teachers to work with students who face challenges in school because of the literacy issues that are associated with dyslexia. The testimonials of parents, teachers, and professionals throughout the program are what drive the issue home. Current issues surrounding dyslexia are addressed and viewers will be surprised to learn that dyslexia is not that rare, 20% of the world’s population has the disorder. The narrators also do a great job at clarifying the myths associated with dyslexia. With early interventions like differentiated instruction and classroom accommodations, students who struggle with literacy because of dyslexia no longer have to feel uncomfortable while in school. Many successful people have overcome their dyslexia and live normal lives. College and university librarians who serve students studying early childhood education, will feel comfortable adding this documentary to their collections.
