What defines disability, the idea that enhancements can make us more than human, and the ethics behind genetic screening and manipulation are just some of the thought provoking topics that surface during FIXED. Despite showcasing a few amazing advances, including a wearable exoskeleton that enables a woman with limited motor function to walk, the documentary does not linger on the advances themselves. Instead, it focuses on men and women affected by disability and their opinions about these new technologies and what they mean for both disabled and able-bodied people. The film best serves an audience that is willing to engage in a dialogue about disability and society. Collections that support medical humanities, bioethics, and disability studies will find this film to be especially relevant. Viewers expecting to see all of the latest and greatest enhancement technologies and hoping to gain a better understanding of the science behind these technologies may be disappointed.
