This DVD, and its companion website, profile the life and work of Alaska governor and Secretary of the Interior Wally Hickel (1919-2010), who spent much of his life working to balance both the preservation of natural land and the promotion of capitalism and commerce for the state of Alaska. He came up with the philosophy of "the commons," and joined together with other northern countries to form The Institute of the North. The film focuses on the man himself, his work, and his legacy, while the website provides added features such as a timeline of Hickel's life along with the history of the state of Alaska, various projects he worked on, a biography of his wife, and various educational activities for K-12 students. A unique look at a fascinating politician and innovator who tried to blend environmentalism with capitalism.
