Reviewed by Brad Eden, Ph.D., Dean of Library Services, Valparaiso UniversityThis film, independently produced and directed, tells the story of a dying language, people, and culture. The Garifuna language is an Afro-Amerindian language and culture surviving in Honduras. The story is about a teacher who returns to his village and roots, and tries to raise money for a new school while a nearby tourist resort tries to build into his people's territory. A parallel story is told about the history of the Garifuna people by the teacher's son Ricardo, as he rehearses a play on the last stand of the Garifunas against British colonialism in the nineteenth century on the island of St. Vincent in the Caribbean. This is a masterful and insightful story told by the Garifuna's themselves; it is the only film with the majority of the dialogue in Garifuna. It has already won numerous awards, and is worth viewing by almost all age groups and levels.
