Reviewed by Michael Fein, Coordinator of Library Services, Central Virginia Community College, Lynchburg, VAThis production uses interviews with a number of different French Jews, who all discuss the present and future of the Jewish community in France. Beginning with a teacher discussing the Dreyfuss Affair with adolescents, we hear from two descendants of Captain Dreyfuss, an author, a leftist-atheist Jew, a university professor, and several others. Most seem to have some apprehensions and almost all discuss Israel and Zionism. All except the professor speak in French, with the professor speaking Hebrew. All of these are given very clear English subtitles. The comments are interesting and give a different view of the situation of Jews in Europe than what many may hear in the U.S. What struck this reviewer the most is that none of those interviewed discussed their situations in religious terms rather than cultural/sociological terms. The picture and sound are flawless. Jewish studies programs should purchase. Other libraries where this may be of interest should at least consider.
