Reviewed by Justin Cronise, D'Youville College, Buffalo, NY and Genesee Community College, Batavia, NYThe Song Within Sedona is composed of inspirational vignettes and interviews with women in Sedona, Arizona, sharing their stories and wisdom. These are strong, smart, passionate, and articulate women with positive messages for women of any age. The lessons they share are empowering, and often come back to trusting oneself and finding the power within.
Almost all of the women are creative types (artists, writers, musicians) or involved in alternative health and wellness (yoga, massage), and this film will resonate most with individuals in those fields. Likewise, the film production has a “new age” feel, with abundant layering of images and views of the natural beauty of the Sedona region. The wisdom is valuable and universal, yet one also gets the sense of a narrow slice of life in terms of profession, economic status, and race. The message is clear though, that when women in a community get together, the whole community will benefit.
The Song Within Sedona is certainly an affirmation of the wisdom and inner strength of women. This film is recommended for women of all ages, and would be well-suited for public libraries and general college library collections.
