Reviewed by Rodney Birch, Reference Librarian, George Fox UniversityJoaquin Pinto, a central figure in the Portuguese film industry, recounts his daily struggle in living with HIV. As we works through the process of when he was diagnosed, and life since, he offer some challenging insights regarding life, humanity, friendships. He offers a candid exploration, often documenting his own forgetfulness as a result of the drugs and treatments he endures. He also examines how the world, at large, dealt with the new epidemic of AIDS/HIV in a time when epidemics had been “eliminated.” More than once through the film the viewer catches a glimpse of the appreciation of life, and the experiences each new day brings. A cautionary note, though, as the film offers occasional glimpses of homoerotic art and activity. This film would be most suited to those studying film, especially international film and/or LGBTQ studies.
