It’s difficult to imagine that in this day and age people with disabilities still face discrimination. In America, we are fortunate to have laws like the Americans with Disabilities Act, which prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities; unfortunately, laws like this don’t exist everywhere. The truth is, discrimination against people who are differently-abled occurs more often than we’d like to realize; discrimination does not discriminate. Body and Soul is a must see film that will enlighten, inspire and motivate viewers. In this documentary, we venture into the lives of three individuals from the country of Mozambique who struggle with ordinary tasks that most of us take for granted. In this film viewers witness the emotional and psychological side of dealing with physical disability. Anyone who has ever experienced being stereotyped, stigmatized, or ostracized (disabled or not), will relate to some aspect of this thought provoking documentary. Body and Soul is a great educational resource that’s appropriate for high school audiences, as well as college undergraduates. There are plenty of teaching moments in this film that can support both natural and social science curriculums. Special and general education teachers will see the value in this film. School, academic, and public librarians will want to add Body and Soul to their collections.
