Wrestling with Life honors the legacy of amateur wrestler Phil Nowick (1970-2010) and highlights aspects of youth amateur wrestling including, the coveted wrestling tournament, the Tulsa Nationals. Phil’s brother Dave Nowick is featured as he coach’s youth wrestling as they advance to the Tulsa Nationals. Dave is a reliable guide in presenting Phil Nowick’s story and explaining the big business of youth amateur wrestling. Wrestling adages are explained to aide in delving further into the machinations of this sport. This film is inspirational, merging philosophical musing with competition.

Though some scenes detract from the films primary focus, the content, in the end, achieves the basic intent of exploring youth amateur wrestling and honoring the life of Phil Nowick. What’s more, the clear narration is coupled with enthrallingly dramatic music juxtaposed against the footage of championship wrestling matches at the Tulsa Nationals. This documentary is based on Phil Nowick’s book Wrestling with Life: Stories of My Life Immersed in the Sport of Wrestling (2011). This piece is most appropriate for public, school and college libraries that have a need for inspiring content.
