Depression and its effects has received significant media coverage of late with the deaths of celebrities like Robin Williams and Heath Ledger. The War Within approaches the topic from the perspectives of teenagers and young adults who struggle with this mental disorder. Each narrative captures the efforts of the individual and, in some cases, the families as they come to terms with the illness. The film addresses the topic of depression within non-white cultures, as well as various socioeconomic and gender-related settings. One young man indicated that young males are likely to be depressed because they aren’t supposed to cry or show vulnerability – they have no outlet for the release of societal pressures. Each interviewee indicated that people don’t have to suffer with depression—that you can get through it—but it is something that is always with you. The film provides information on resources and services for young people and families seeking help and guidance. The War Within may be most applicable to youth in upper elementary, middle school, and high school. It is recommended for inclusion in school library and public library settings.
