The film begins: “Afghanistan is a place where it is hard to know what is going on…the only way to find out is to go there!” And so our directors do just that. They take us on a journey of investigation.

Frame by Frame utilizes an engaging narrative of four photojournalists who take us on a deeply thoughtful journey into the recent manifestation of the people and land of Afghanistan. The film’s directors simultaneously create an educational and ascetic portrayal of how photography and journalism combine to reflect reality in times of rapid change. The film focus is on the land and people of Afghanistan, but is farther reaching and is relevant to our global society as a whole.

It has been argued many times that media both helps to construct as well as depict reality. While critical camps emerge at each end of the construct, Brombach and Scarpelli offer the viewer an excellent example of how media plays both roles effectively. Media is both a tool of static as well as dynamic forces in regard to change and social movement.

Frame by Frame offers the viewer much upon which to reflect. The sound and visuals offer a stark view of life both before, during, and since the Taliban. Editing of sound and scenes are excellent. The distributor provides a film trailer through Vimeo, and it may be purchased as a DVD or streamed at the film website. Viewers may purchase, obtain an educational license, or host a community or campus screening. Interested parties may join the discussion and follow the film at the Frame by Frame Facebook page.
