Emilia-Romagna is a thriving province in northern Italy, boasting some of the highest concentrations of cooperatives in the world. Consumers in these cooperatives not only patronize these companies, but they also contribute to the decisions in their policies. These invested interest organizations claim that both state and corporate bureaucracies are reduced in their cooperatives, keeping costs and prices low and increasing their competitiveness. The film devotes a great deal of time to their daily workings, such as those devoted to food sales, social work and daycare, and construction. There is a great emphasis on quality and organic products within the Italian “coops.” The film also demonstrates how social cooperatives have created jobs for the disadvantaged. These people make productive contributions instead of depending upon public welfare programs.

This stimulating documentary offers an intriguing portrayal of the successful blending of capitalism and democracy in right-sized enterprises and settings. The filmmakers offer an alternative economic model for sustainability, environmental consciousness, and promoting an exceptionally high standard of living. Admittedly, however, the film does not explore the downsides, risks, and perhaps the failures of such cooperative initiatives. Nevertheless, the film offers a compelling and dynamic imagining and practical application of a creative business model.
