Michael Perlman’s The 99%: Occupy Everywhere is a position piece documenting socio-economic injustice counterbalanced by the Occupy Wall Street (OWS) Movement. Persons interviewed passionately advocate for this movement through personal anecdotes and research. This singular message hampers a thorough critical analysis. Further, the use of celebrity to purport a pro anti-corporate message devalues the authenticity of the film.

The film establishes OWS as a global movement. Perlman features sub-issues on education, health care, knowledge economy, prison industrial complex, gun control, environment, unemployment, underemployment and corporate greed. Though these issues are overtly glossed over in the film they are synthesized as catalysts to the OWS movement. This helps keep the film together.

Sanctimonious in tone, Perlman’s film serves as an introduction to the Occupy Wall Street movement for general audiences. Viewers will find more substantive resources through articles, essays and coverage distributed by the Public Broadcast Service. The 99%: Occupy Everywhere may aid the collections of a public library.
