Nassar’s Republic delivers an honest, straightforward historical account of arguably Egypt’s most influential leader. With the format of a narrative timeline infused with commentary, this work details of events such as the nationalization of the Suez Canal, the Arab-Israeli conflict, the conflict with the Muslim Brotherhood, Cold War diplomacy and finally the Six Day War. Although the preceding list emphasizes conflict, this film pays close attention to Nassar’s immediate and long-term goals, such as freeing Egypt from colonial burdens, and building the Aswan dam. Further, this work expands upon his initiatives in granting women the right to vote, building schools, fighting illiteracy and bringing about land reform. At each step, the film sheds light on Nassar’s decision making, coupled with reflections by historians. Generally, there is a sympathetic view of Nassar, as stirring stories of citizens living during his regime tell of their genuine love for him. His opponents, however, pointed out that Nassar did not deliver on his promise of establishing a true democracy.

Audiences will enjoy this brilliant film, with its conciseness and perfect pacing. It truly offers a compelling tale of shrewd political maneuverings, political sensitivity, idealism and, at times, sadness. Implicit messages of this regime’s echoing impacts on the Middle East will hit home for viewers.
