The goal here is for the Egyptian national football team to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Yet, We Must Go is much more than a sports documentary. It is the story of a nation suffering chaos and transformation as it undergoes a national revolution.
The Egyptian Revolution of 2011 was a violent and monumental event for Egypt. It led to the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak and left the nation in disarray. David LaMattina and Chad Walker do a beautiful job of weaving together the story of the Egyptian national football team with that of the Egyptian revolution. We see the national team struggle, in a tense political arena, to achieve its dream. We come to realize just how important it is to qualify for the World Cup, not only to the team, but to the entire nation. Through qualifying, the national team has a chance to unify a divided nation.
This documentary is comprehensive and well edited. Complete with interviews, raw footage, and an exceptional soundtrack, it is a great educational piece for those studying sports, politics, international studies or history. We Must Go is highly recommended for any academic library.
