The Good Breast explores the issues surrounding mastectomies in the United States, and the role that breasts play in female identity. The film presents the idea that mastectomies are often performed unnecessarily as a treatment for breast cancer. Through interviews with patients and surgeons the film emphasizes the role of education in the decision-making process for women facing mastectomy surgery. Patient interviews also provide evidence for the various means that women use to cope with not only the diagnosis of breast cancer, but the idea of mastectomy. This is a valuable resource for nurses and other medical professionals, especially those working in the area of oncology, surgery and women’s health.
