Unregulated businesses use public waterways as waste disposal mechanisms and destroy a natural resource in the process. In this documentary, we meet a determined woman working to reign in pollution from the Santiago River in Mexico, known locally as the “River of Death.” For her efforts, this community minded activist faced death threats.
Although supported by her local community, she faces obstacles from government and industry, which views pollution control as cost without economic benefits. This is her story, and it is told very well.
Those interested in environmental activism will find this an instructive and useful reference. Any class that hopes to raise awareness of the importance of individual activism for the good of the community will be rewarded by screening this video.
