Reviewed by Kristan Majors, Woodruff Library, Emory UniversityA quirky, laugh-out-loud documentary that is an excellent choice for environmental clubs and environmental film series. Josh Fox and his film crew travel around the world to interview activists, aid workers, tribal leaders, entrepreneurs, filmmakers, and artists. In their travels, including to New York, the Amazon, Samoa, China, and Zambia, they learn how, despite the challenges, people can continue to inspire, motivate, and make a difference.
If you are familiar with Fox’s work, this one is very different from his other films. You’ll still need a box of tissue, but viewers are inspired instead of haunted. The soundtrack truly makes the film and fortunately, everyone can enjoy it as the closed captioning includes the words to the songs.
The down side is the film is very expensive and will likely compete with limited budgets, An Inconvienent Sequel (2017), and other similar films already on your shelves. If you need the latest educational video on climate change for classroom use, this may not be the first film to purchase as it is written and produced by an environmental activist, the majority of those interviewed are activists, and it is a very long film for viewing in class. That said, the climate change data is current up to the Paris conference (COP21) in 2015 and explained by respected, award-winning authors and climate scientists.
