Reviewed by Sandy Costanza D’Youville College, Buffalo, NYThis is a very long, sad movie about a desperate situation for a young girl in China who is sexually and emotionally abused. It contains long shots of dramatic scenery and /or still shots that should enhance the experience but do not. The viewer is left wondering what the meaning of the photography pauses are meant to symbolize. If they are to emphasize the beautiful scenery of China then they are out of place in this film as there is very little, if any beauty to be found in the story. If the photography is to symbolize the bleakness of Honggui’s situation it is unnecessary to emphasize, as the sadness in this young girl is apparent from the opening credits. There is very little conversation throughout the film and the sexual innuendos may be disturbing to the viewer. Certainly the hopelessness and the helplessness of this film is definitely disturbing.
