This has been and will continue to be a controversial topic for many years. As of this filming Chili was one of only six countries where abortions were illegal without exception. Established by Chili’s Lesbians and Feminists for the Right to Information, The Abortion Hotline was run by women as a means to help women make a choice in their reproductive lives. Their goal was to provide information on women’s health as well as a drug called Misoprostal used to induce abortion. Information was provided regarding the drug and how to safely use it because the actual drug must be obtained by the caller on the black market.

Since the filming the hotline has ended however the organization published a manual regarding women’s health, reproduction and the safe use of Misoprstal to induce abortion which is being widely distributed. As of September 2017 abortion under some circumstances has been legalized which is a huge breakthrough for women’s rights. Legal abortion can be obtained for instances of rape, to save the mother’s life and when the fetus will not survive the pregnancy.

It’s a start but the majority of women seeking to end a pregnancy most likely do not fall into these categories, and thus the debate. Of special note is the bravery of the women in this film, those manning the hotline as well as those seeking help. All of the activities can be prosecuted yet they found the courage to stand up and fight for what they believe in and in the making of this film. Of concern is that very little emphasis is placed or encouraged on the use of birth control in Chili.
