A Bold Peace notes that the US Constitution does not have provision for a standing army. When Costa Rican’s fashioned their constitution after the US Constitution, they took things one step further and incorporated provisions to prohibit a standing army.
This documentary explores the effects of a country existing without a military, and how they defend themselves. Among the many strategic and economic advantages to not having formal armed forces, it is also true that there cannot be a military coup d'état.
A Bold Peace is sure to be a great conversation starter for discussing the costs of militarization, war and the benefits of living in peace.
