The Standing Rock Sioux are best known for the recent demonstrations against the Dakota Access Pipeline. We also see a coalition of tribes in the Four Corners region advocate for the Bears Ears National Monument and the Southern Ute Tribe, which has been very savvy in developing petroleum resources on their land and wants to expand production. The film’s producers bring in a number of players in all of these situations as we look at history, law, and politics with a number of differing, and often conflicting, points of view given a voice. This is probably one of the more “even-handed” documentaries that this reviewer has ever watched and would make an excellent catalyst for discussion of a number of topics such as tribal sovereignty, ecological issues, use of public lands, and energy development to name a few.
