The Dark Side of the Moon focuses on mental illness and homelessness as seen through the eyes of three mentally disabled men. Their stories are moving, and told with a frankness and sensitivity that is compelling. The past despair and isolation these men communicate is balanced by their open discussions regarding the ultimate successes in their lives. The program provides the viewer with a readily comprehensible, but intimate, look at the varied and extreme difficulties of mental illness, without focusing entirely on the negative.

Each man has an opportunity to share his perspectives on the social stigma and alienation mental illness brings. The need for support and close relationships is highlighted, and specific resources are discussed.

The documentary has been produced with excellent video and audio standards. Its brevity does not compromise the content quality of the program. The Dark Side of the Moon is highly recommended for academic libraries. The program provides support for study and research in counseling, psychology, social work, and diversity issues. The program is also recommended for public libraries with video collections that support public awareness, community action, and volunteerism.
