In the heart of the Nuba Mountains in Sudan is Dr Tom Catena. He is a lone doctor, surgeon, humanitarian and a Catholic dedicated to caring for the Nuba people. Daily he risks his life at the only area health care facility, Mother of Mercy Hospital, to provide medical care to one million innocent people who are casualties of the continued conflict in the Sudan. He performs surgeries, many of them amputations, and helps fight widespread disease with little money and nonexistent governmental support. His religion, faith and dedication to these people are what sustains him.

In Dr Catena’s words, “Everybody’s life is valuable. We can’t loose sight of that or we loose our humanity.” This is a film of hope, tragedy, inspiration and love. Most of us can’t even imagine Dr. Catena’s world and yet he is able to find the good in the people as well as an appreciation of the culture. The Heart of Nuba is an opportunity to show the world how other cultures live, how other cultures adapt to their daily challenges and yet are able to sustain their families in a positive light. Everyone can make a difference. Dr Catera certainly has!
