This film fits in with the various scholarly and legislative works calling for and enforcing reform in the criminal justice system. In Pursuit of Justice demonstrates how social activism can lead to legislation, and how legislation leads to reform. Too often agendas or desire to solve a crime has led to the wrongly prosecuting for a crime. Reform legislation allows for evidence to be re-opened and testing to be done. Currently, North Carolina is the only state which provides for court cases to be re-opened and the new evidence heard by a panel of judges. Since the implementation of the commission 1,642 "claims of innocence" cases were reviewed, with 13 of these reviews leading to exonerations. Further, additional legislation was introduced to reform forensics practices in state bureau of investigation labs.
