Reed, Riley-Hickingbotham Library, Ouachita Baptist University, Arkadelphia, ARDeeply rooted in our society is the perception that mentally and physically challenged persons should be relegated or dismissed because they do not fit the “norm.” Intelligent Lives shatters this notion, bringing into sharp focus their true capability and inspiring contribution.
Peering into the lives of three disabled young adults, the film goes beyond simply profiling their struggle for inclusion. It captures the essence of what makes them human – their connection to the world around them, their passion and creativity, their sense of humor, and their relationships. Each story shows promise in the face of America’s troubled history on intelligence testing and disability service, which narrator and Academy Award-winning actor Chris Cooper so aptly describes alongside his personal experience as a parent of a special needs child. Cooper, like others featured in the film, exemplifies advocacy and caregiving at its best – a selfless, loving investment in the lives of persons who give so much in return.
Screened at numerous festivals and venues across the country, Intelligent Lives aired on PBS World Channel’s America Re-framed series. A must-see for all who serve the disabled, Intelligent Lives is an outstanding resource for courses in education, psychology, and social work and an essential choice for libraries of all types.
