Unspoken: Asian Americans on Coming Out to Immigrant Parents intercuts young Asian Americans from the LGBTQ community reading letters to their immigrant families. It is a viscerally powerful film, well edited by producer/director Patrick G. Lee and editor Bruce Wang. The website suggests that a 25-minute version is in the works which would be a definite asset to a course in gender studies or Asian American studies. The 7-minute film is enjoyable and interesting with compelling subjects and the construct of them writing letters to family works well in expressing the emotion of the piece while elucidating some of the challenges these young people face. The subjects are interesting and varied - and supplementing the material with more extensive interviews with them would make it an excellent teaching tool. Unfortunately, due to the length of the content it is enjoyable but does not delve deeply enough into the issues it raises.
