An American Satan conceptualizes for general audiences an overview of the religion of Satanism. The film is wide-ranging in exploring the different gradations of satanic worship. The gamut of which entail the individual philosophy of self-reliance and Carpe diem, to the devotees through the organization of the Church of Satan, to a singular Satanist attempting to open a portal to hell.

Viewers learn the history of the Church of Satan, the foundational teaching of Satanism, rituals, artifacts and iconography as well as and a fascinating biography of the founder of the church, Anton Levee. Informative. Satanic Myths are debunked. And surprising charitable works in the community are revealed. This allows audiences to intellectually comprehend the satanic creed.

Given the substantive dialogue offered on real-world issues as each relates Satanism, one identifies this as an orientation into this subject though not a recruitment film. Devotees openly discuss challenges of interpersonal relationships among family, 1st amendment rights, as well as the need to vet those from the religion who are unable to distinguish between fact and fantasy. These themes aid in communicating to a practical American sensibility.

A companion piece that serves as a counterpoint to this work is the book Michelle Remembers (1980) by Lawrence Pazder which fostered the “satanic panic” zeitgeist of the 1980’s. There are scenes of nudity which may not be suitable for some viewers. Likewise, ideas expressed herein are critical of the Christian faith which may limit the film’s appeal. Best suited for academic libraries that serve the liberal arts, particularly religious studies programs keen on developing scholarly critical analysis among students.
