Not many people get the opportunity to live two separate lives within one lifetime. In that, the same can be said about being successful in two separate careers. Some people just see the world differently and try to bring light to the people around them. Enter Howard Bloom, a name you are perhaps not acquainted with yet. Is it because he has been hiding in the shadows? Or is it because he has been hiding in plain sight?

The Grand Unified Theory of Howard Bloom is a biographical documentary that delves into the life of a onetime music publicist turned philosopher, with numerous accolades in both ventures. In the 1980s, Bloom worked with several Motown musicians, rock artists, and rappers. What was so different about him was his lust for authenticity. His successes were driven by pushing clients to discover what was inside their souls. Without that, anything would be disingenuous. At the height of his progress came the debilitating diagnosis of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome - a condition that led to a personal “about face.” After years of suffering through a total burnout, he rose like a phoenix and began to explore the science of life. Since then, he has authored seven books, lending his insight into sociology, psychology, personal growth, and the cosmos.

Bloom fancies himself a maker of ideas. With his mortality in question, his desire is to ensure that his legacy is fulfilled; to enlighten others with his philosophies. Throughout the documentary, the viewer will take in all of the subject’s eccentricities as he tames his personal chaos with routines, lists, and monogrammed clothing. Through Bloom’s awkwardness appears a genuine soul. Those who have worked with him sing his praises through interviews, proving that he has influenced the lives of many with his intellectual musings.

The documentary chronicles the man’s final desire to continue injecting his philosophies after death. While indeed being an interesting life story, the film seems to fall short of answering the question of his authority on such scientific themes. Without substantial proof, his ideas can be dismissed as pure conjecture. The viewer will form that opinion on their own. This film would be an entertaining addition to any library but does not appear to offer much in the realm of sparking an educational conversation.
