Edvard Munch: The Scream of Life provides a very close examination of the artist’s life through his work. Almost all visuals in the film are Munch’s paintings. The paintings depict the losses, relationships, and struggles that deeply impacted his life and experiences. His most well-known work, The Scream, is included, but it is carefully situated into his full oeuvre, rather than disproportionately overshadowing his other work.

This film is recommended for audiences College – General adult. The film is slow-paced with adult subject matter, but it effectively tells the story of the artist and clearly communicates why and how he created his art. While it does not spend much time comparing and contrasting Munch to his contemporaries, his work does speak to larger movements in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Screeners should note that the film is in French with English subtitles.
