Meddle is a short film that touches on Haida Manga artist Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas’ work with Museum of Anthropology in Vancouver, BC and his “Coppers from the Hood” series. Unfortunately, the story the film wants to tell is not one that fits into its seven-minute run time. The film feels like a trailer, rather than a documentary, jumping between topics while not sufficiently exploring them. Those who are already familiar with the artist, his work, and Pacific Northwest art history may be able to supplement the gaps in the script with their knowledge, but the average viewer is likely to find it confusing and incomplete.

This choppy short film is not recommended. Other short films that explore Haida artwork more clearly and concisely may be a better choice for educational viewing. The excellent Gyaangee: Beyond Being Silenced about Haida artist Robert Davidson, also from Bullfrog Films, is a strong alternative, with a similarly short run time!
