King for a Day is a brief documentary centered on Padstow, Cornwall, intending to spotlight the rich history and culture of its people by following two distinct groups, the Old Oss and the Blue Ribbon Oss, as they prepare for the May Day festivities deeply rooted in tradition.

The documentary opens with a voiceover narrating a captivating tale about women in satanic costumes warding off a Danish King's invasion in 1341 while the men were away at war. However, the film falls short in providing ample detail or explanation about the May Day festival itself, leaving viewers without a foundational understanding of the event before delving into its current practices.

Regarding cinematography, the film incorporates archival material starting from the 1950s as well as candid interviews with community members and descendants who have taken up the mantles of each Oss. While this juxtaposition draws parallels between past and present May Day festivals, the varying film and sound quality throughout, coupled with abrupt switches, may pose challenges for some viewers.

Santi's film would benefit from a more cohesive thesis and a progressive narrative, guiding the audience through the documentary seamlessly. One notable strength lies in its ability to capture the essence of Padstow and convey the community's pride in its rich history, emphasizing the role of centrifugal elements like the Oss Oss.

King for a Day serves as a time capsule of tradition, offering a look at the May Day festivities of Padstow, Cornwall. Viewers will gain a narrow look of the city and its inhabitants through the lens of May Day. This film is recommended with reservations.
