This very interesting and stimulating video traces the development of medieval drama from its origins, through Hildegard von Bingen's musical morality play Ordo Virtutum (The Ritual of the Virtues) all the way up to the sixteenth century morality play Everyman. The video begins with a musical performance of Hildegard's Ordo, moves to a detailed discussion of vernacular dramas as illustrated by the York mystery plays, discusses vernacular comedy through a performance of the Second Shepherd's Play, and ends with the development of morality plays such as Everyman. Expert commentary by medieval scholars and theater staff from the 1998 staging of the York mystery cycle in England is provided throughout.

Medieval Drama: From Sanctuary to Stage is highly recommended for secondary and college level audiences involved in medieval history, medieval drama, and medieval music. It is one of the few videos on this topic which is well constructed, provides actual authentic recreations of these dramas to the viewer, as well as expert and experienced commentary on the historical and sociological effects of these dramas on medieval society. Additionally, it is an excellent introduction to the study of Shakespeare, as these dramas were the precursor and influence on his life and work.
