This British production provides an introductory training experience for the ancient massage method of Shitasu. After a brief explanation of the underlying principles behind the practice, producer and instructor, Andy Harrop starts right in demonstrating the basic techniques. By the end of the tape, he covers all the basic moves for a complete upper body massage.

Shiatsu operates on the philosophy that there are energy meridians running through the human body. Certain meridians correspond to various body systems and organs. Blockages can occur along the meridians due to stress, injury or other disturbances be they physical, emotional or spiritual. Shiatsu massage works along the meridians, using pressure (similar to accupressure) and stretching to help alleviate the blockages that can lead to a state of disease.

Shiatsu Today provides enough of the basic principles and movements to allow for a beginning massage. All the techniques are clearly demonstrated in a calm, straightforward manner. The procedures are explained in small sections, so it is easy to stop the tape and practice or review. Obviously a 60 minute tape can not substitute for a hands on teaching experience or delve too deeply into the philosophy of this centuries old healing art, but this program is as good an introduction as you will find. Recommended for public and academic libraries with collections on massage or alternative health.
